LEARN and CREATE – “My Heart” bracelet or herringbone with a twist - part 1A

Surely, someone will fall for it in a heartbeat. This charming bracelet consists of two flat herringbone “legs” bent into a heart-shape. Offer yourself some relaxing, creative time with “My Heart” bracelet … have fun!

Challenge:

No previous knowledge is necessary. Pay a little extra attention to the turnabout and keep track of the number of beads on the inside column of each herringbone “leg”. Check your thread tension regularly.

Supplies for «My Heart» bracelet:

  • 11/0 or 10/0 seed beads
  • 6x6 mm round pressed Czech beads (druk beads)
  • polyethylene thread (fishing line or fireline) and James John needle #10
  • toggle clasp
  • scissors and a bead mat

Weaving instructions for «My heart» bracelet:

  • cut off a comfortable length of thread and keep about 15 to 20 cm tail thread
  • pick up 4 seed beads and circle back through the 2 bottom seed beads to put the other 2 seed beads next to them and form the base of the two columns for the first “leg”

  • note: the design is made of two “herringbone legs”, each “leg” has two columns
  • pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the following two beads

  • note: make sure one bead stacks up on each column
  • pick up 1 seed bead and go UP through the three beads of the previous column

  • pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column

  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column

My Heart bracelet - get in place to add beads

  • pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column
  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column
  • note: the two top beads consist of one bead of the previous round and one of the beads you just added
  • pick up 5 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column

  • go UP through the three top beads of the previous column
  • note: meaning, you go up through one bead of the previous round and two beads of the 5 you just added

  • and you continue by going DOWN through the 2 top beads of the next column

CONTINUATION: "My Heart" Bracelet

  • pick up 2 seed beads and and go DOWN through the next bead on the same side
  • note: you made a little roundabout and started the next "leg"

My Heart bracelet - add 2 beads to start next leg

  • go UP through the 2 top beads of the previous column

My Heart bracelet - go up through 2 beads of the outside column

  • pick up 2 seed beads go DOWN through the top bead of the inside column

My Heart bracelet - add 2 beads to the inside of the leg

  • go UP through the 2 top beads of the outside column
  • *pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column
  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column**
  • repeat *...**
  • count the beads on the inside of each “leg”, there should be five of them

  • to mirror the other side and complete the top of the heart-shape: pick up 1 seed bead and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column

My Heart bracelet - mirror the other side and add 1 seed bead

  • go UP through the top bead of the previous column as well as through the bead you just added

My Heart bracelet - get in position to add the top of the heart-shape

  • pick up a seed bead, 1 druk bead , 1 seed bead, 1 druk bead, 1 seed bead
  • pass your needle through the top bead of the other “leg”

My Heart bracelet - add 1 seed bead, 1 druk bead, 1 seed bead, 1 druk bead, 1 seed bead and connect with other side

  • go DOWN through the outer beads of the “leg”, in other words go down 7 beads

My Heart breacelet - go to the tip of the heart to start the next heart

  • to start the next heart-shape: ***pick up 1 druk bead and 4 seed beads

My Heart bracelet - add 1 druk bead and 4 seed beads to start next heart

  • circle back through the 2 middle beads of the 4 seed beads you added
  • pull your thread tightly
  • note: you created a Y-shape

CONTINUATION: "My Heart" bracelet

  • pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the next bead

My Heart bracelet - build the first leg, two beads at a time

  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column
  • *pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column
  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column**
  • repeat *...** two more times
  • make sure you have 5 seed beads stacked on the inside of the “leg”
  • pick up 5 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead

  • go UP through the top bead of the previous round and circle back through 4 of the beads you just added
  • note: you went up through 5 beads to create the turnabout

My Heart bracelet - build the second leg by adding 2 beads at a time

  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column
  • note: you started the next “leg”

  • *pick up 2 seed beads and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column
  • go UP through the two top beads of the previous column**
  • repeat *...** two more times
  • check if you have 5 beads on the inside of the leg

  • to mirror the other side: pick up 1 seed bead and go DOWN through the top bead of the next column

My Heart bracelet - add a single seed bead

  • go UP through the top bead of the previous column as well as through the bead you just added

My Heart bracelet - go up thru the previous bead and the one you just added

  • pick up 1 seed bead and 1 druk bead to complete the top of the heart-shape

  • circle your needle back through the seed bead above the previous druk bead as well as through the druk bead and the following outer seed beads to reach the tip of the heart-shape**

CONTINUATION: "My Heart" bracelet

  • note: you went through 1 seed bead, 1 druk bead and 9 seed beads to get in place for the next heart-shape

My Heart bracelet - pass your needle thru the seed bead above the previous druk bead and thru the druk bead

My Heart bracelet - go thru 9 seed beads to reach the tip of the heart-shape

  • to create the next heart-shape: see *pick up 1 druk bead and 4 seed beads … till … reach the top**
  • and repeat the pattern till you have reached the desired length
  • to attach the toggle clasp create a little loop of 5 seed beads at the tip of the last heart
  • reinforce the structure by going back through the thread path
  • create another little loop of 5 seed beads at the other side of “My Heart” bracelet
  • for extra mobility, attach a jump or split ring to each little loop and add a part of the toggle clasp
  • enjoy!

Suggestions:

  • create the bracelet in a single color or choose druk beads in a different color and keep the seed beads in a single color
  • if you have a odd number of heart-shapes in the bracelet, you could give the middle heart a different color and keep the rest in a single color
  • a single heart could be a lovely earring too
