LEARN and CREATE – a “Square Element” in flat peyote stitch - part 1

Elements are parts you may potentially connect together to create earrings, bracelets, charms, pendants and necklaces to your heart's content. As in the “Plum” bracelet, the flat “Square Element” is a peyote with a tweak that breaks a straight line in two pieces to create a corner.

Challenge:

Don't forget to create a step-up to get to the following round. Pay attention to add two beads in each corner.

Supplies for the “Square Element”:

  • 11/0 Japanese tubular seed beads type Delica in two colors: color A and color B
  • S-lon thread size D and needle #12
  • scissors and a bead mat

Weaving instructions for the “Square Element”:

  • cut off about 1,20 m thread and keep 20 cm tail thread
  • set-up: pick up a PAIR number of Delica beads for each side: side 1 - 3 in color A for the side, 1 in color B for the corner, side 2 - 3 in color A, 1 in color B, side 3 - 3 in color A, 1 in color B, side 4 - 3 in color A, 1 in color B

Square element - set-up, start

  • you picked up 16 beads in total
  • pass your needle through all the beads to make a circle and continue till you get in front of a corner bead in color B

Square element - set-up, form circle

  • round 3: *pick up 3 beads in color B, skip the corner bead and go through the next bead which is in color A

Square element - round 3, add 3 beads for the corner

  • pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead*

Square element - round 3, add 1 bead in peyote

  • pick up 3 beads in color B, skip the corner bead and go through the next bead
  • note: this is the only round in which you add three beads in each corner
  • pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead
  • repeat the process *...* two more time
  • go through one more bead (which is in color B) to make a step-up and get access to the next round

Square element - round 3, step-up

  • note: the step-up consists of two beads of which one of the recent round and one of the next round without skipping a bead
  • round 4: **pick up 2 beads in color B, skip the corner bead and go through the next bead which is in color B

Square Element - round 4, add 2 beads in the corner

  • pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead, pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead**
  • repeat **...** three more times
  • make a step-up by going through the next bead

CONTINUATION: a "Square Element" in flat peyote stitich

  • round 5: ***pick up 2 beads in color B and go through the next bead which is in color B

Square Element - round 5, start - add 2 beads in the corner without skipping a bead

  • note: you do no longer skip a bead in the corner
  • pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead, pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead, pick up a color A, skip a bead and go through the next bead***
  • repeat ***...*** three more times
  • to summarize: each side in regular peyote adds an extra bead in each row, each corner is made by adding 2 beads
  • make a step-up

Square element - round 5, step-up

  • to finish, you add only one bead in each corner instead of two beads and do the rest in regular peyote

Square Element - final round, 1 bead in the corner, sides in regular peyote

  • attach your thread by zigzagging through your work piece
  • have fun !

Suggestions:

  • for a larger center, start with: 4 times (5 beads in color A and 1 bead in color B), thus a total of 24 beads or 4 times (7 beads in color A and 1 bead in color B) giving a total of 32 beads
  • for a larger square: simply add more rounds
  • you could also use seed beads instead of tubular seed beads (type Delica)
  • of course, you could make the “Square Element” in a single color or in as many different colors as you want
  • in round 3, you could add two beads in the corners instead of three beads creating a regular herringbone effect in the corners, but the final shape will be a little less square
  • for a bracelet: connect several squares by attaching bugle beads in between them
